Grooving: Diamond Surface Inc. started runway grooving in 2003. We've grooved runways, and de-icing pads in states such as Iowa, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. In 2006 we grooved the Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. We are capable of grooving 5 feet wide in one pass. Production varies from 350 square yards an hour in hard aggregate (concrete), to 1400 square yards per hour in soft aggregate (asphalt). Our method of grooving uses diamond impregnated saw blades mounted on an arbor. The purpose of runway grooving is to eliminate hydroplaning on wet runways. Grooving reduces drying time of pavement which improves skid resistance for shorter braking distance of aircraft on wet pavement. DSI meets the specifications of the FAA. You can find out more information at this link referencing Advisory Circular 150/5320-12C and any others that apply. |
